London 2012 to Rio de Janeiro 2016 for the Olympics

With London 2012 now less than three years away preparations for the London Olympics, the third occasion the games have been held in England but the first since 1948, are deep in progress.

Meanwhile the International Olympic Committee have announced the next country to host the Summer Games will be Brazil with the sporting showcase being held in the city of Rio de Janeiro being chosen to stage the 2016 Games.

Rio won the nomination in Copenhagen with Madrid, Tokyo and Chicago failing in their bids.

Brazil was a surprise winner with Chicago expected to get the backing of the IOC.

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva was overjoyed stating, “The world has recognised that the time has come for Brazil” following his impassioned speech which promised to, “deliver an unforgettable Games”.

IOC President Jacques Rogge announced the winner late Friday as Brazilian football legend Pele, a key contributor to their bid, wept with joy.

The city’s famous Copacabana beach vanished under a sea of green and yellow reports claim.

The Brazilian efforts were praised by the IOC for presenting a “a very strong technical bid”.
