A new £5m diagonal crossing for pedestrians has been opened at Oxford Circus, Central London - one of the busiest parts of London - in a bid to improve the world famous West End shopping area for the estimated 43,000 shoppers who negotiate the area each hour during peak times.
Based on x-crossings in Tokyo, the new design stops cars, taxis and buses in all directions, allowing shoppers to cross the junction diagonally. The junction - between Oxford Street and Regent Street - will now be able to handle double the number of pedestrians and ease overcrowding at the busy intersection, easing access to Oxford Circus tube station for the estimated 230,000 passengers who use the station each day when visiting the West End to enjoy the capital’s shops and nightlife.
London Mayor Boris Johnson unveiled the crossing by striking a two-metre high cymbal in homage to its Far Eastern inspiration, as Japanese musicians played taiko drums.
A giant X, in the form of 60m (196ft) of red ribbon was also unfurled by devotees of cult Japanese Manga characters dressed in colourful costumes on the day of the unveiling on Monday.
Former Boxer Joe Calzaghe may find himself back in the celebrity gossip columns and with a new fight on his hands when girlfriend, Strictly Come Dancing star dance instructor Kristina Rihanoff finds out the following…

He gave a greeting to the waiting photographers that some may think would be rude, and he was even wearing the same clothing he was seen in when he kissed Kristina, 32, on BBC2 spin-off show It Takes Two. The pictures are now all over the London papers… oh dear!
The pair were booted off the dance competition more than a week ago but are thought to be dating.

Cheryl’s first solo album, 3 Words, will be released on Monday 26th October - the start of the same week that former pop legend Michael Jackson releases his first posthumous record.
The celeb star will be performing her new single ‘Fight For This Love’ on Saturday night when she appears on the X Factor - a move which is sparking controversy. The Girls Aloud singer is pre-recording her song in front of a studio audience of 800 in preference to performing live.
X Factor’s creative director Brian Freidman claims Cheryl has nothing to prove, “This is not Cheryl’s competition. She’s already competed in one before on TV, she’s proven herself as an artist so I don’t think it would really matter.”
The 26 year old celebrity and wife of Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole, is still very nervous about the performance and has banned all family and friends from watching the show!
Cheryl told GMTV, “The girls are itching to come down to support me when I perform but I kind of don’t want them to - because it is more scary.”
